This study examined point light displays but used these displays with distortions added to then ask the question does hearing footsteps help discrimination.

So they added sound of a footstep and an out-of-phase footstep and both helped. Only when they randomly placed the sounds at any intervals did it not help discrimination of the point light walkers.
